VRYHEID resident had a surprise on Sunday night – it suddenly rained. It was heralded and accompanied by a display of thunder and lightning out of proportion to the amount of rain that actually fell, which was about 4mm.

On Monday, the sky was blue again, and the rain that fell did little more than settle the dust.

So, despite the un-winter-like temperatures, the dry weather continues, and each and every day there is less and less water in the town’s dams – Grootgewacht, Bloemveld and Klipfontein.

Last figures available from the Department of Water Affairs have Klipfontein at 43.2% full, down from 44.4% the previous week. This time last year Klipfontein Dam was 78.6% full.
