Dundee/Vryheid all clear after night of chaos

It is not clear if the protest will flair up again as the local government elections come closer

The Dundee/Vryheid road, between Dundee Secondary and the Museum, is open this morning.  It was closed late yesterday afternoon after an apparent EFF land-grab, below the Museum, turned violent.

Stones were thrown at passing motorists and the road was then closed.  Police and security officers fired rubber bullets at the protestors, said to number several hundred.

The veld was also set on fire in an attempt to distract police, said one security officer.  Temporary shacks, put up by the protestors, were demolished as this is what started the stone-throwing, protestors said.

Police said many of the EFF supporters had come from Nquthu.  Several police vehicles were damaged during the protest.
