5 injured as stand collapses at matric farewell

Everyone ended up in a pile on the ground, surrounded by twisted metal and the screams of the injured

5 people were injured when a stand collapsed at the Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec) matric farewell on Friday afternoon.

People were enjoying the glitzy occasion when the unthinkable happened and a stand collapsed. The stand, one of about six supplied by the municipality, was packed with people, all watching the arriving matriculants.

It suddenly fell, with about 40 or so people on it. Everyone ended up in a pile on the ground, surrounded by twisted metal and the screams of the injured.

At least 2 of the 5 injured had to be rushed to hospital with severe cuts and one of them suffering from blood loss.

Sharaj Ambulance Services, who were on hand at the farewell, treated 3 people at the scene and 2 were transported to hospital for further treatment.

The reason for the stand’s collapse is being investigated.

The Ladysmith Gazette went out and about, and spotted at least one other stand at a popular sports ground on the verge of collapse. We have asked the municipality for a response.
