Update: Steadville road cleared after protest

The protesters have given the mayor 3 weeks to resolve the problem of slow development in the area

Madiba Street in Steadville is now clear after being blocked by protesters this morning (Friday).

The protesters, who are demanding RDP houses in the Thembalihle area, blocked the entire roadway with rocks and roof sheeting. They also burnt tyres and even a JoJo tank.

The road was littered with broken glass during the protest.

Mayor Vincent Madlala addressed the group of protesters and they agreed to give the mayor 3 weeks to resolve the problem of slow development in the area.

RDP housing in the surrounding areas started back in 2010 and some of the houses haven’t been completed yet.

A large number of police officers were at the scene, as well as municipal officials and ward councillors. The latter also addressed the protesters.
