Protestors, camera crews and the attention of the nation; this was the scene as two alleged killers made their second appearance in court last week.

Protestors, camera crews and the attention of the nation; this was the scene as two alleged killers made their second appearance in court last week.

The accused, Jabulani Mzikhona Buthelezi and Thabani Sithole, have been implicated in the murder of taxi boss, Khuzimpi Hanson Khumalo. Mr Khumalo was gunned down at his home in Madadeni Section 5 on May 6; an incident apparently fuelled by the ongoing taxi war in Newcastle.

Reports suggest he sustained 11 gunshot wounds. However, 12 casings were found outside his home, with a further three casings found in his yard.

The suspects were arrested at a taxi rank in Nongoma on July 23, after evading arrest for months. Law enforcement officers accompanied by the Hawks, used the surveillance footage obtained from Mr Khumalo’s residence to assist in identifying the suspects.

Mr Buthelezi apparently told the court he knew nothing of the incident. He further stated he owned a taxi operating without permits in and around Newcastle.

A silver Audi was reportedly used as the getaway vehicle on the day of the alleged murder. Mr Sithole told the court Mr Buthelezi also drove a silver Audi.

In addition, Mr Sithole said he also owned taxis operating without permits in the Nongoma area.

Witnesses will apparently testify that Mr Sithole was seen in the driver’s seat when they fled the scene of the crime.

Investigating officers claimed sufficient evidence had been obtained to link the accused to the heinous crime.

Furthermore, it was stated Mr Sithole and Mr Buthelezi conspired to kill Mr Khumalo.

The magistrate presiding over the case said Mr Khumalo was shot execution style. She denied bail as the video footage clearly showed Mr Buthelezi firing several shots at the victim.

The accused will be imprisoned for life should the evidence prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. They will remain in police custody pending a decision from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Investigations continue.
