Earlier this year, the Lions Club hosted it annual Miss Newcastle R1 Rander Fund-raiser.

The contestants managed to collect R2 500, which was donated to Newcastle SPCA on August 14.

Club president, Lize Smith said the contestants took to the the streets every year to raise funds for an organisation in need of financial assistance.

“We saw an article in the newspaper where it said the SPCA was in a bad state,” she explained. “That’s why we decided to help.”

SPCA manager, Heather Gero was grateful to the Lions Club for its support.

“It’s not just about the money; it’s about the thought that one non-profit organisation is willing to help another.”

Mrs Gero concluded she would be able to rest peacefully thanks to the support of the Newcastle community.

“All I can say is thank you!” she exclaimed.
