Carwash under ‘water wastage’ scrutiny

The workers at the carwash confirmed that the municipality was aware of their business and even went on to say that they had approached the municipality requesting financial assistance.

WITH ISSUES on water restrictions still being questioned, many community members are leaving no stone unturned in questioning any activity that seems to be contributing towards the wasting of water in town.
One such activity, which was first brought up by a certain community member on the local Facebook Page, Vryheid Classifieds is the car wash at the Post Office parking lot.
According to comments by some residents, the carwash wastes litres and litres of water each day and it was unclear how the AbaQulusi Municipality planned to implement the water restriction policies on such businesses.
The workers at the carwash confirmed that the municipality was aware of their business and even went on to say that they had approached the municipality requesting financial assistance in order to grow their business.
“We approached the municipality and asked them to assist us with buying hose-pipes, a vacuum-cleaner and other equipment and they came through to see the carwash a few times yet nothing was done thereafter,” said one of the workers who wished to remain anonymous.
According to this worker, they also discussed having their own tap near the area they are located on as they currently have to fetch water from the Post Office toilets.
At present, the car washers are paying no money for their consumption of water.
The AbaQulusi Municipality was contacted with regards to the matter and the Vryheid Herald is still awaiting response.
