Community rescues drowning six-year-old

The child was found floating face down in a dam by residents who jumped into the water and brought the unconscious boy to the bank

A valiant rescue effort from community members in the rural area of Rookdale near Bergville saved the life of a six-year-old boy on Friday.

The child was found floating face down in a dam by residents who jumped into the water and brought the unconscious boy to the bank.

Acting fast, the residents performed Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on the boy and called the Emergency Medical Services (EMS). EMS spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said that the child had regained consciousness when paramedics arrived on scene.

“Treatment was taken over by the paramedics. The child’s condition was stabilised after continued treatment. Once he was stabilised, he was transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition.”

The incident is being investigated.
