Protest enters 4th day with no end in sight

So far today, no reports of clashes have been received

Taxi price increase protests in Ladysmith entered their 4th day, with no end in sight. There are reports of more roads being closed as more disgruntled residents join in the protests.

Burford, Bluebank, Roosboom, Besters, Driefontein and Ezakheni roads have been or are in the process of being blocked.

The so-called ‘R1 protest’ was sparked by a unilateral tariff increase by taxi owners that came into effect on Saturday, August 1.

According to protesters, this makes the taxi tariff from Ezakheni R16, literally R1 per kilometre. The average person travelling from Ezakheni to work and back each day is spending  over R700 a month on taxi transport.

While it has been dubbed the ‘R1 protest’, residents need to find on average an extra R60 a month for transport.
