With more roads being barricaded, gunshots ring out in Ezakheni

It looks like it will be a long, cold night in Ezakheni for both protesters and police

Our reporter living in Ezakheni reported that at least 10 shots were fired in an increasingly volatile Ezakheni.

The shooting took place little over 30 minutes ago. He was unable to confirm who had fired the shots, but protesters told him that police had fired warning shots near them.

This as more barricades are going up in Ezakheni.

Anger against taxi bosses flared on Saturday as taxi owners unilaterally increased taxi fares throughout the district.

With Ezakheni on full lock-down, protesters in Roosboom have re-barricaded the Ladysmith / Colenso road (R103) with burning tyres.

The reason for the possible escalation may stem from a meeting between municipal officials, politicians, taxi owners and police late this afternoon that failed to end with a solution.

We will update this story as soon as we know more.

Police have described as rumours reports that two taxis had been set ablaze by protesters earlier this afternoon.

The only thing certain is it will be a long, scary night for Ezakheni residents.
