Ezakheni on lock-down as protesters seal roads

85-year-old woman dies while waiting for ambulance to arrive

The taxi tariff increase protest, which started early Saturday morning, continues unabated…

Protesters have barricaded roads leading into Ezakheni and Steadville.

Pieters, Helpmekaar and Steadville roads are a problem at this stage, with rocks, tyres and tree branches making them impassable for motorists.

There have been reports of fatalities in Ezakheni as a result of the protests. The closure of roads and the resulting delays in response time for emergency services has led to fatalities being reported. An 85-year-old woman waited for at least 2 hours before paramedics could reach her. By then, all they could do was declare her dead.

At this stage, Roosboom (R103) and the N11 are the only roads still open. The new road leading from Protea Drive to the Pieters intersection is also closed.

Graders have been brought in to clear Helpmekaar Road. Police, together with RTI and Public Safety, are presently making sure that protesters do not intervene.
