Elm Street’s nightmare of litter

Torn refuse bags and litter lay scattered on a portion of the pavement just next to a small pedestrian alleyway off Elm Street in Arbor Park.

“Something needs to be done to address the litter. We cannot live like this, it is unhygienic,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous.

The resident felt it was imperative the municipality took steps to ensure the matter was resolved.

Thava Kelly from Community Services Waste Management, said illegal dumping was a problem throughout Newcastle.

In an attempt to address the problem, Mrs Kelly explained the municipality had taken steps in creating bylaws which included penalties for those found guilty of illegal dumping.

“It is aesthetically unpleasant and builders rubble becomes a breeding ground for rodents. Residents should be aware that builders rubble can be removed by the department at a nominal fee.”
