Low blood stocks have the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) facing a crisis.

Shavani Sewpaul, regional spokesperson for the organisation, explained school holidays and the prevalence of flu, coupled with frequent collisions, had diminished stocks.

The national level is below four days’ worth.

In light of this pending crisis, the Newcastle Donor Centre is hosting a Big Bleed on Friday (July 17) between 9am and 6pm.

This event ties into Mandela Day, which occurs on Saturday.

“We are trying to get as many donors as possible – those who donate will receive special fleece blankets and thermal mugs.”

Ms Sewpaul encouraged regular and first-time donors to utilise the opportunity to make a life-saving contribution as their 67 minutes of service.

“45 donors visited the centre on Saturday after a national SMS went out. However, we still need more donors to help reverse the situation.”
