Obey the fire season rules – no unauthorised burning is allowed

The fire not only blazed inside the memorial enclosure but was also fiercely burning along the roadside

Starting a fire during the dry winter months, especially in unfavourable conditions, is extremely hazardous and a small flame could quickly escalate into a raging veldt fire.

On Sunday, Alexandra Street in the vicinity of the Garden of Remembrance was set alight. The fire not only blazed inside the memorial enclosure but was also fiercely burning along the roadside, which poses a visibility challenge for motorists.

A second fire further down the road.

Residents are encouraged to adhere to the rules of fire season by not lighting open fires, unless in a demarcated area. The dry months in the middle of the year are referred to as fire season and begins on May 1, ending on November 30.

During this time residents may not burn grass surrounding their property, utilise incorrect warming devices such as stoves, welding machines or candles instead of conventional heaters or burn fire breaks during hot, windy or dry conditions. To report fires, call the Customer Care Centre on 036 352 6464/4444.
