ANOTHER month has gone by and still there is no word from the AbaQulusi Municipality on what will be done about the Mondlo taxi rank.
The taxi rank, which was built in the KwaB section of Mondlo last year complete with stalls for informal traders stands completely useless to this day.
According to residents in the area the taxi drivers are said to have been reluctant to move to this new rank as they were very comfortable with the old one.
It is alleged that no discussions were held between the municipality, community members and the taxi drivers prior to the building of the taxi rank.
“If they had come forward and asked us what we thought about this idea, this issue could have been avoided,” said one resident.
It is alleged that the taxi drivers would have been content with an upgrade of the then already existing taxi rank.
At this moment, it is still unclear what will now be done to the taxi rank, which is currently gathering dust.
Will it be put down like the plaza kiosks, which are still erect although the municipality was set to demolish them and build smaller trading structures? Or will it like the Cultural Village, remain unused and instead cost the town a few more millions?
No response was received from the AbaQulusi Municipality regarding this matter at the time of going to print.
