Break-in brakes Oval Track

"They are watching our movements for sure. They must have waited for us to leave the club on Wednesday."

Criminals hit the Oval Track again on Wednesday night.

The latest instance marked the fourth time the club was targeted in the past two weeks, thieves making off with spotlights from the office building and signboards.

Club members were ‘absolutely disgusted’ at the state of affairs.

“They are watching our movements for sure. They must have waited for us to leave the club on Wednesday,” explained longstanding member, Boet Buys.

Mr Buys said a fire on the outskirts of the track had actually prevented more losses. An observant resident noted the fire seemed to be moving in the direction of the Oval Track and called Mr Buys, who arrived at the track and seemingly interrupted the robbery.

“If it wasn’t for the fire, they might have done worse.”

As it was, the roller door of the clubhouse was damaged by attempted forced entry, and the ticket office was left a mess of ashes, cardboard and takeaway containers.

“We don’t even lock the ticket office anymore.”
