AGAIN and again I notice articles in the Vryheid Herald which have something to do with the municipality, and to which is attached the remark, “the municipality was contacted for comment in this matter, but had not responded at the time of going to press.”

In normal circumstances, you would imagine that if the municipality missed the deadline, it would ensure that its response would be published in the next issue, but this seldom, if ever, is the case. You would imagine that the municipality would like to explain the situation or answer the questions being raised in the interests of openness and transparency.

Clearly that is not the case.

It would appear, therefore, that the municipality’s attitude to the newspaper and to the people of AbaQulusi is one of “up yours, we owe you nothing, least of all an answer or explanation.” This is absolute arrogance. They seem to believe that they are answerable to no one, and certainly not the people who actually pay all the salaries received by councillors and municipal workers, from the municipal manager down to the street sweeper.

And yet, next year, the councillors will be running around like headless chickens telling the voters how much they care for them, and how much they value their vote. The hypocrisy of the councillors at election time is astounding.

My hope is that the voters remember all the times that they read in the Herald that the municipality had failed to respond. It really is time that voters cast their ballots using the heads and not their hearts.
