Two Dog Unit members attacked, assaulted

A case of assault with intent to do grievious bodily harm was opened at Glencoe police station

A member of the Glencoe Dog Unit, Warrant Officer Charl Ferreira, was taken to hospital after he was viciously assaulted by three men – one of whom used a cricket bat.

Warrant Officer Ferreira was sent to attend to a complaint at Starlite Cafe, Ghandhi Road, in Glencoe at about 6pm on Sunday,

Earlier, member of the Dog Unit, Warrant Officer Bhagwandeen, had gone into the cafe to buy bread and milk when he was confronted by the three men.  He was said to have been attacked by a group of people who assaulted him, badly injuring his shoulder.

He managed to call the police   that is when Warrant Officer Ferreira was assaulted on the head and face with a cricket bat.  Witnesses said he was hit with a knob kerrie on the nose while another person hit him on the back of the head with a cricket bat.

A firearm was drawn and a shot fired by the police.

Another passing off-duty policeman came to assist.
