Biggarsberg learners jet off to Glencoe Spar for budgetting fun.

The next project will entail a visit to a hardware store where the learners will learn about measurements.

Armed with calculators, notebooks and trolleys, 86 grade-seven learners from Biggarsberg Primary School set out to Glencoe Spar to learn about budgeting.
This activity was done in a bid to teach the children about financial literacy which is a part of the curriculum for mathematics.
The budding mathematicians were instructed to plan a birthday party which caters for twenty people, and do so while working on a budget of R700. The learners had to decide on the type of party and purchase the food items, refreshments and even decorations needed. Many learners opted for a braai as they found it most convenient and, of course, most fun. According to Aluso Malemba, “we opted for a braai as it is most convenient and easier to budget for.”
The children had lots of fun and enjoyed the project very much. Nonthando Mokoena said, ”this project was very exciting and enjoyable.” Aphiwe Khumalo shared her sentiments and said, “ this project was very good, I will learn lots from it for future reference.” The children filled their trolleys and paid for their goodies (the till at which they paid had been re-registered so that the children did not really have to pay). After the shopping fun the learners had to put their maths skills to the test and calculate VAT and change.
This initiative was made possible by Biggarsberg Primary, Principal and Teacher, Ms Lyn Burger, who aims to bring the community to the classroom. The road to fun learning is not over for the learners as Ms Burger has planned more fun projects similar to this one in the forthcoming months. The next project will entail a visit to a hardware store where the learners will learn about measurements.
