88-year-old desperate for a new home

But this glimmer of hope is starting to fade and Mr Mchunu reports that conditions at his shack are deteriorating fast

88-year-old Sikhombana Mchunu has been disappointed once again. The Wembezi resident who lives in C-Section has been battling for many years in a dilapidated shack that has been worsening day-by-day.

In November last year, Mr Mchunu sought help via the Estcourt News when he pleaded with Umtshezi Municipality to abide by an instruction by the KwaZulu-Natal Premier to rebuild a home for him.

At the time Municipal Manager Nonhlanhla Gamede reported that the land Mr Mchunu is living on is owned by Banzi Pan/Ithala Bank but added that the municipality was in negotiations to transfer the land to Mr Mchunu.

Since then, the elderly resident has been living with the hope that he may soon have a brand new home. But this glimmer of hope is starting to fade and Mr Mchunu returned to the Estcourt News on Friday to report that conditions at his shack are deteriorating fast but he was no closer to knowing when a home will be built for him.
