There was good news and bad news at yesterday’s Endumeni Council budget meeting where Councillors should have finally passed the 2015/12016 budget.
It never happened as only one ANC member – Mayor Mahaye was present. The ANC has six Councillors. The DA’s Mr Mfeka was also absent.
With no quorum, the meeting had to be postponed until Wednesday. The meeting did not get off to a good start as however used the hallowed Council Chamber last, never cleaned up their mess of fast food packets, dirty plates and more.
Councillor Anthon Raubenheimer was far from impressed. The mess was finally cleaned up and the meeting tried to get underway 15 minutes late. Councillor Bongiwe Mbatha complained – half jokingly, half seriously – that there was not even water or tea for the Councillors.
“Cut the expenses then we will be able to afford tea.” she shouted across at the Mayor. Councillor Raubenheimer, also in the same mood, said ‘tea is rather colonial – consider something else’.
The Mayor said the five ANC Councillors had got held up at a youth Parliament session in Greytown. With that the meeting was postponed and residents will again have to wait if the 8% rates hike and the 7% in refuse removal is going to be trimmed. There are also questions over the proposal to buy the Mayor a new R800 000 vehicle.
Questions that again will have to wait…
