Success in CBD crime operations

Over 350 counterfeit items of shoes, clothing and razor blades were seized

35 people were arrested for crimes which included assault, being an undocumented immigrant and for employing undocumented immigrants, on Thursday, June 11, when police conducted a multi-disciplinary operation in the CBD.

SAPS  joined forces with Ladysmith K9 unit, Immigration officers from the Department of Home Affairs, by-law enforcement officers from Public Safety, and representatives from the company, HB Counterfeit Investigations, which represents three law firms (Adams and Adams, Spoor and Fischer and SC Johnson).

These firms in turn represent various major brand names in safeguarding intellectual property rights.

Several spot fines were issued for failure to keep premises clean and for allowing individuals to sleep-in  on the business premises. Over 350 counterfeit items of shoes, clothing and razor blades, valued at around R240 000,  were seized. Eight business people completed an undertaking with the company and voluntarily surrendered their goods. In the future, if the  businesses were  found in possession of counterfeit goods again , they could be charged in terms of the Counterfeit Goods Act and  if found guilty,  could receive a R5000 fine or a face a 3- year term of imprisonment for each counterfeit item found.
