UPDATE: Community demands answers

No response to the protest and no inclination to address the crowd has come from the municipality yet.

After being shot at with rubber bullets by riot police earlier this morning, Utrecht community members have reconvened at the Magistrate Court to hand over their memorandum.

The protestors are challenging a vast number of municipal decisions and apparent lack of action.

Five protestors, including two of the marches conveners have been arrested.

An elderly women was among those who were injured when police opened fire, and had to be taken to the Niemeyer Hospital for treatment.

Protestors are fearful police will open fire once more.

According to organisers of the call to action, the march was in accordance to the rules stipulated during last week’s section four meeting.

Mayor breaks silence.

Striking municipal workers and Utrecht community members have gathered outside the Emadlangeni municipality, belting out freedom songs at the top of their voices, while dancing under the watchful eye of the police.

Inside the municipality, Mayor Joe Zikhali is currently engaged with member of the ANC regional executive committee and other stakeholders.

Cllr Zikhali was contacted and after months of silence promised to meet with members of the media in the hour.  However, the municipal offices are on lock-down at the moment, with no one being allowed to enter or leave.
