‘Notorious thief’ was shot after attacking guard with a knife

"If he had been running away - as police earlier stated to the website - he would have been shot in the back. But this is not the case."

The 36-year-old man shot and killed by a  Qomkufa security guard near Stratford farm on Saturday had lunged at the guard with a knife after being apprehended.

Tim Finn, marketing manager of Qomkufa Security, said he wanted to ensure that the correct facts  are given to the public.

“Our guard did not chase the man and simply shoot him from a distance.  This man (the deceased) is well-known as a thief and is believed to behind heaps of housebreakings in Peacevale.  We had been looking for him for sometime and on Thursday, he was recognised and chased but managed to escape.

“On Saturday morning, he was seen again and the guard gave chase.  The suspect was apprehended and in doing so drew a knife from his sleeve which he placed into his hand.  He then slashed at the guard with the knife, cutting his pullover.  The guard drew his firearm to warn the suspect who then lunged at him again with the knife.  He then shot the suspect four times in the chest.

“If he had been running away – as police earlier stated to the website – he would have been shot in the back.  But this is not the case.”

The guard appeared in the Dundee Magistrate’s Court this morning where the murder charge was dropped and the guard let go without any bail.

“We are confident it is a clear cut case of self-defence,” Mr Finn said. The deceased, believed to be from Dlamini Village, was notorious for a number of cases specifically robbing and stealing from a local transport company
