UPDATE: Seventh death confirmed in R618 carnage

It was alleged the driver might have been four and a half times over the legal alcohol limit.

On Monday morning, a seventh victim lost their life while at the Vryheid Hospital, following a crash involving 17 people on the R618.

According to sources on scene at the time, the bakkie’s canopy was extremely loose, and many of the victims were thrown from the vehicle during the crash.

The Vryheid Herald confirmed Ngome police were investigating allegations of drunken driving.

Ngome is a police station along the R618.

The investigation came about after the driver was alleged to have been four and a half times over the legal limit.

The driver suffered minor injuries during the incident.
