Sister Beth Cockburn – gone, but not forgotten

To those lucky enough to have crossed her path, you are truly blessed. You will always remain an icon and example of compassion. Rest well, Dame Beth!

“A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again,” – Maya Angelou.

On May 19, the community of Newcastle received the devastating news that Elizabeth Cockburn had passed away of natural causes.

More commonly known as Sister Beth, the 89-year-old icon and friend was nothing short of extraordinary.

On October 16, 2006, Her Majesty the Queen sanctioned Sister Beth’s promotion to a Dame of the Order of the Hospital St John of Jerusalem- the same order that bestowed knighthood on former president, Thabo Mbeki.

Sister Beth wished to share the international accolade with everyone who played a role in her personal life and career. She maintained her life’s work was dedicated to glorifying God.

Beth worked as a general nurse, midwife and occupational health sister, going the extra mile to put a smile on just about everyone’s face.

Here are a few of the profound tributes to Sister Beth:

“Sister Beth Cockburn touched so many lives. Exuded love and compassion. Gentle and kind, she went about putting everyone else first. Not just physical well-being, she made every heart feel warm and comfortable with such grace in her demeanour. An excellent human being, whose void will no doubt create emptiness in some lives, and the need for forbearance in others. I first met Sister many years ago when I had just returned from my overseas studies. Her soft-spoken and earnest desire to comfort and nurture each person she met, overcame me and we remained friends over the many years when, regretfully, I could not spend more time with her in these latter days. She had me very involved with the St John’s cadet division then. A true passion of hers. Teaching the now not so young students, who I am certain will both fondly remember those days and mourn her passing. Hers was a type of generosity that few of those of us who remain, will ever match. Her dedication to seeing so many happier and better, was recognised when she was knighted Dame of the order of St John. I remember the call that day when we spoke about it with such pride yet with so many humble words of acceptance. To the Almighty we belong and to Him is our return. Your next journey has begun. Hamba Kahle,” – Doctor Imran Keeka.

“Sister Beth was one of those people who was kind and unselfish she dedicated her life to the community of Newcastle. she was dedicated to st Johns and the people belonging to the organization. she was well liked by all that worked with her,” – Keith Haskins.

“Sister Beth’s kindness extended to everyone and her value for life was evident in her ways. Hospitable, caring and was awesome company among the youth. She had my respect and showed us how to respect others. Definitely will not be forgotten,” – Darryn Lewis.

“What a Lady… Lots of memories and footprints left behind by a wonderful lady,” – Margery Meijerink.

“It’s with a sad heart that brings bittersweet memories of sister Beth. I remember how at one of St. John’s inspections she arrived with one 1″ heel shoe and one 2″ heel. When I spoke to her she just laughed and said she thought she’d dislocated her hip. I think at one stage in Newcastle birthing history there weren’t too many babies that didn’t go through her capable and loving hands. Her babies will remember her until they pass leaving indelible footprints. She is one of Newcastle greats. We all loved her- she was one in a billion,” – Ursula Fenton.

“She had such an ability to love and care for everyone as if her hart had room for the whole world. Her sense of humor was contagious and her love for animals and her garden was always evident. She was truly loved by all,” – Ann van Helsdingen.

“We wish to extend our sincere condolences to Sister Beth’s family and friends. From the response received from the community of Newcastle it is evident she was loved. To those lucky enough to have crossed her path, you are truly blessed. You will always remain an icon and example of compassion. Rest well, Dame Beth!” – The Newcastle Advertiser team.

Her commitment to making a difference will forever remain the yardstick of sheer determination and dedication.

Your passing left a heartache no one can heal, but memories no one can steal. Farewell, Sister Beth!
