WHAT started out as a debate among these six young men ended up becoming one more way to improve the lives of fellow community members.

Sandile Xaba, Samkelo Khanyile, Njabulo Mathebula, Ndumiso Magubane, Thabo Ndlovu and Musa Manyathi were discussing how long it would take a person to walk from Vryheid to Dundee and like typical boys sniggering and pointing out who among them would not make it to the finish line.

The matter though soon became a serious one when one of them pointed out how it would be if they walked the 76 km’s from Vryheid to Dundee for charity.

According to Sandile, he had heard about how the people living at Vryheid’s dumpsite were in dire need of food and clothing and how matters were much worse for them in the winter.

“I heard Ukhozi FM’s Sbu Buthelezi mention that they had visited the area to give food and clothing to the people there and I came to school and informed the guys about this,” said Sandile.

With determined minds and caring hearts, the six have decided to look for sponsors who can give them donations whether food or money which they will give to the community members at the dumpsite.

“We want to do this walk to show everyone that we are willing to do something in order to get these sponsorships and that we are not just walking around from door-to-door asking for donations, we actually want to brave the winter cold and walk the distance to show that we care,” the group of young men said.

Community members who would like to join them are welcome to come forward.

“Even if it takes 12 hours, as long as we make it to Dundee,” said Samkelo in conclusion.
