IN THE effort to show their availability to the public and help solve problems within their communities, Mayors and councillors from all around the Zululand Municipality held the celebration of Councillor Constituency Week on Thursday, May 14 at Cecil Emmett Hall.

Under the Back to Basics- serving our communities better programme, the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs members discussed issues regarding clean drinking water, sanitation, electricity, shelter, waste removal and roads – all of which are basic human rights, essential components of the right to dignity enshrined in the South African Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The Back to basics programme was introduced to South Africans by President Jacob Zuma in September 2014 after he pointed out that local government needed to be in a position to respond to the grievances of their communities and this required effective inter-governmental relations and fast intervention.

At the event on Thursday, councillors discussed how they would all be working together (regardless of ones political preference) to ensure best quality service delivery.

Issues such as the decline in water levels in dams all around Zululand and electricity supply were at the top of the priority list of issues to be tackled.

Council members urged the community members to work with them and to be patient as they are doing all they can to ensure good service delivery to the people
