A water leak in Ayliff Street has left a business owner fuming.

“The municipality says we mustn’t waste water, but when a pipe is broken they don’t do anything about it,” Fred van Dyk said, as water flowed over the pavement outside his business.

He said the leak had started nearly two weeks ago and despite reporting the matter to the municipality, nothing had been done yet. “Are they going to make the taxpayer pay the bill for all the water?” he asked.

Dr Dumisani Thabethe, Water Services Customer Relations Manager, said most leaks were caused due to corrosion of steel pipes and repair work should take take one to two days, depending where the leak was.

“However, it may take up to two weeks after we received the query before it is repaired. The main reason is that queries like burst water mains have a higher priority and due to staff and union issues a backlog of water leaks may build up when we have a lot of burst mains to attend to,” he said.

Dr Thabethe can be contacted on 034 328 3300.

“Please note that only escalated complaints with reference numbers will be attended by me,” he concluded.
