Dannhauser crime not Xenophobia related, say police

Two foreign-owned shops targeted on the same day.

Dannhauser Police have allayed fears that xenophobia is behind the recent crime in the area.

On April 20, two foreign-owned shops in Koppie Alleen and Annieville were targeted by criminals.

The owner of the shop in Koppie Alleen told police that three men entered the shop, pretending to buy cigarettes.

When he gave them the cigarettes, two of the men pulled out firearms and told him not to move.

They made off with five cellphones, cigarettes, airtime and R15 000 in cash.

In the second incident, a foreign-owned shop was burnt to the ground, also on April 20. The owner reported to police that he received a call around 10pm to say that the shop was on fire. Damage is estimated to be over R50 000.

Dannhauser SAPS Communications Officer, Constable Nyembe said that they did not suspect the incidents to be xenophobia related.

He urged the community to contact the police on 034 621 6500 if they have any information regarding the crimes.
