View Street plagued by litter and filth

"It is not right, I have children and can't keep them from playing outside because of stuff such as this."

Litter lays scattered on the pavement outside town houses in View Street, Lennoxton.

According to a disgruntled resident, the litter has been an ongoing issue for some time.

“The municipal refuse bin collects refuse on Fridays, but people are taking their rubbish out on a daily basis.

“It has been like this since I moved into my house a few years ago and no one is taking responsibility. It is unhygienic,” he said.

“I had to remove personal hygienic items that blew into my yard the other day.

“It is not right, I have children and can’t keep them from playing outside because of stuff such as this.”

The resident also showed his concern for other children who had to walk down the street barefoot, exposed to the unhygienic rubbish.

“Some people cannot afford shoes for their children and they have to walk through this. Something needs to be done,” the resident said.

Ward Councillor, Matthew Shunmugam, said he had done his best to address the issue and has even gone as far as delivering flyers per hand to residents, which stated that those responsible for the litter and waste would be fined and possibly face criminal charges.

“I think we now need to hold the landlords responsible for the action of their tenants. Maybe it’s time for Council to review its policy and by-laws and take stringent action against offenders.

“We appeal to the public not to be litterbugs,” Cllr Shunmugam said.
