Easter carnage claims two lives

The force of the collision strewed car parts across the entire scene, and paramedics found the bakkie driver had been killed on impact.

Two people have lost their lives in collisions in this area over the Easter long weekend.

Between April 2 (Thursday) and April 6 (Monday), four separate incidents occurred, statistics from ER24’s Communications Department have shown.

Spokesman, Russell Meiring revealed further details.

The first collision took place on Thursday on Albert Wessels Drive, when a taxi driver lost control of his vehicle, leaving the road surface and striking a cyclist, before coming to a halt in a patch of veld.

Paramedics treated 11 injured on scene before they were taken to Madadeni Provincial Hospital.

The injuries, including those of the cyclist, ranged from minor to moderate.

On Saturday, things took a turn for the tragic.

One man was killed and seven others injured in a head-on collision between a bakkie and a vehicle on the R34 near Utrecht.

Upon arrival at the scene, paramedics found the vehicles 100 metres apart.

The force of the collision strewed car parts across the entire scene, and paramedics found the bakkie driver had been killed on impact.

Passengers of both vehicles were treated on scene and transported to hospital.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation from local traffic authorities and members of the SAPS.

Two more collisions took place on Monday.

The second of these capped off the Easter weekend late on Monday, involving a taxi and a light vehicle, also on the R34 outside Utrecht.

Nine people were injured in this collision.

The collision is being investigated – ER24 spokesman, Pieter Rossouw said it is believed the vehicle rear-ended the taxi, causing the latter to veer off the road into a veld.

Five injured were transported to Madadeni Provincial Hospital for further treatment.
