Truck driver passes away from crash injuries

Tragically, Andries would have probably survived virtually unscathed if he had stayed in the cab – the windscreen of which was not even cracked during the impact.

The truck driver, Andries Nxumalo, who was involved in yesterday’s accident, sadly passed away in a Durban hospital today.
Chan’s Transport, from whom Andries worked for, told the Courier that deliveries had been made in Glencoe and the truck was returning to Dundee at about 4.30pm.
For reasons still not clear, the tip bin lifted and struck the Dundee/Glencoe bridge. This caused the truck to veer to the right towards the embankment.
The driver then attempted to get out of the truck by smashing the passenger’s window and jumping out onto the road.
He sustained c-spine injuries as well as two fractures on his skull. He was rushed to a Durban hospital where he passed away today.

Chan’s Transport said the truck was in perfect condition and have expressed their deepest sympathies to the Nxumalo family. “He was driving for us for several years and we are so saddened by this accident,” said Shaiel of Chan’s Transport.
