The Miss Earth South Africa organisation added yet another award to their many accolades last year. Scooping the International Environmental Award for Women in the Environment presented in the Philippines, the team was given an even greater platform for change and awareness within the environmental space.

Ella Bella and Catherine Constantinides are the founders of the Miss Earth South Africa leadership programme. They inspire and encourage young women around our beautiful country to get involved and do their bit for people and the planet.

“It starts with us. As women we are the movers and shakers of communities, so it is up to us to shake things up and get people thinking about ways in which they can help Mother Earth. When we look after Mother Earth, she is able to sustain and look after us,” are sentiments shared by both Ella and Catherine.

April 8 is the closing date for 2015 applications, with national castings taking place soon thereafter.

Castings will be conducted as interviews and workshop sessions, where each applicant will be exposed to issues and challenges the environmental sector is faced with, and how it impacts on our day-to-day living. Castings roll out in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal from May 1 to May 3.

A ‘project day’ will be scheduled for each region in order for contestants to engage with the community and make a valuable impact. They will be exposed to topics pertaining to climate change, energy efficiency, water as a resource, recycling and the broader scope of environmental education.

The programme is endorsed by the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Department of Tourism. The initiatives are run alongside municipalities and corporates seeking to change the face of communities around them, with the message of green taking centre stage.
