“We have been living in these RDP houses for four years without electricity,” this is what the angry community members of Sasko were mainly protesting for.
These community members say that they wrote a letter addressed to the Mayor regarding the matter in November last year yet they got no response.
“In the letter we pointed out all the challenges we as a community were facing living in this place without electricity,” said one resident.
“Crime is at its peak as we have no street lights. We also spend a lot of money buying food daily as it spoils quickly due to us having no refrigerators,” this resident continued.
After their numerous attempts to get answers from the municipality were futile, these community members decided to take to the streets.
A memorandum of grievances was handed to the administrator of the AbaQulusi Municipality today and among the grievances was this matter regarding the electricity, the lack of storm water drains in the area, which has resulted in the houses being extremely damaged due to rain water and the fact that the community members have never seen their ward councillor.
The issue of nepotism within the AbaQulusi Municipality was also pointed out.
The municipality has been given 7 days to respond to their grievances or “things could get messy”.
