Our own ‘WKRP’ in Umzinyathi

It is through his passion, focus and determination that he is now able to fund the radio station.

You can tell a friend to tell their friends that a new airwave has hit town. The newly established Nquthu Community Radio (N-COR) started broadcasting in the Umzinyathi area on February 4.
Station Manager and founder of the station, TN Khanyi, said that, “the full broadcasting of shows commenced on February 8.” He also said the radio station covers the whole of Umzinyathi on 88.4 frequency in areas around Dundee up to Msinga and on 90.4 frequency in areas around Zululand.
This has been a dream come true for Mr Khanyi who began building this dream since 2005.
It is through his passion, focus and determination that he is now able to fund the radio station. In 2007 he started a multi-media company in Nquthu which finances the station.
He said he had spoken to a number of people but because of the lack of funding he had to come up with other means to make his dream a reality and that is how the multi-media company was born. When asked what listeners could look forward to, he promised to give them what has never been done before – a radio station for everyone.
He says the station aims at ’embracing our heritage and to make it known to other communities and the country as a whole.’
He said, “Umzinyathi is full of history and has a number of museums that have so much to offer to our people.
“We want our history and natural treasures to be known and embraced by our people,” beamed Mr Khanyi. The station is aired in three different languages; IsiZulu, SeSotho and English.
His staff of about 29 people, the majority being youth, claim to be bringing in a bit of everything for everyone. He then urged people to support the station as he says it belongs to them.
