Bridge-building Competition
On February 19, Sarel Cilliers High School participated in the annual SAISI Bridge-building Competition which was held in Harrismith. Three teams, that consisted of Grade 12, 10 and 11 learners participated in the event. The participants in each of these teams have Mechanical Technology as well as Engineering Graphic and Design as subjects.
There were 35 teams which participated from various schools from the Drakensberg Region of SAISI.
Sarel’s three teams did very well. Although it was their very first time in the competition, the Grade 10 team finished in 24th position whilst the Grade 11 and Grade 12 teams finished seventh and sixth respectively.
Each team was issued with 25 wooden spars which are 5mm x 5mm x 600mm long, a set of Epoxy glue that had to be mixed and a 1m length of string. Using these, teams had to design and build a bridge which was then loaded with weights in order to determine how much it could carry.
