Music to feed the soul

A variety of classic musical and movie favourites was purchased by Sharon Cross and donated to Shepstone Place

The Sound of Music was in the air in the lounge at Shepstone Place Home for the Aged on Monday morning. Residents from the home had gathered around with their morning tea and coffee for the first of many movie days. A variety of classic musical and movie favourites was purchased by Sharon Cross and donated to Shepstone Place.
Among the DVDs are The Nutcracker, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Mama Mia, Babe and many more light-hearted and musical movies.
Mrs Cross said she felt that the elderly folk needed music in their lives. “Music is marvellous and is food for the soul,” remarked Mrs Cross. Her donation was welcomed by the residents, one of whom started singing along, much to the delight of the other residents and Home Administrator Debbie Potgieter said that music has a positive effect on the elderly, especially those who have dementia or were depressed.
“The residents were so excited when the notice went out. Some of the residents who do not leave their rooms came to watch the movie. We are thinking of showing a movie twice a week with popcorn and during winter, a warm drink,” commented Mrs Potgieter. If readers would like to contribute to the DVD collection with family westerns, comedies or musicals, please contact Mrs Potgieter on 036 352 2191.
