Celebrating 55 years of marital bliss

Mr and Mrs Beharie, fondly known as Chand and Surajh, tied the knot on January 17, 1960 and still remain happily married 55 years later.

“What God puts together no man can separate,” a famous quote from the Bible and has been brought to life after Mr and Mrs Beharie celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
Mr and Mrs Beharie, fondly known as Chand and Surajh, tied the knot on January 17, 1960 and still remain happily married 55 years later.
The pair have two children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. “Our one daughter is in New Zealand. She works for the Department of Education and is also an author and the other is also a teacher in Pietermaritzburg,” Mr Beharie beamed.
When asked the secret behind their happy marriage, Mrs Beharie said, with a twinkle in her eye, “living by good ideals and morals.”
Mr Beharie agreed and added, “we talk to each other and face our problems head on.”
He also strongly advised young couples to steer clear of alcohol in order to keep a happy home.
Mr Beharie described lovingly how he and his beautiful bride began life. “My mother chose my wife and we waited three years before getting married and beginning our lives together.”
After marriage, Mr Beharie worked at a local supermarket and then went on to buy his own supermarket while his wife designed dresses. They have recently retired and have taken to gardening to pass the time. “I love my flower gardens,” said Mrs Beharie.
The couple reminisced on their life together, “it has been a good time and we have had a wonderful marriage.”
They left young couples with the following message, “have a good understanding, discuss problems and don’t argue about small things.”
