Water trickles through but it will take time – Umzinyathi

The Tayside pump station suffered extensive damage when valve actuators were knocked out due to a localized electrical problem. Load shedding has also affected pumping.

The water situation is stablising in the area but parts of Glencoe – the areas on higher ground – are still without as the reservoir still fills up.

Pradeep Ramlall of Umzinyathi’s water management services said in the morning the Glencoe reservoir was only 25% full and needs to be at least 65% full to feed the entire town.

Water tankers have dispatched, he said.  Even collected water for the tankers has been a problem and water from the Ingagane and Dannhauser reservoirs has been used to augment supply.

Wasbank continues to experience difficulties. Their water is locally fed and also receives from the Buffalo via the treatment plant.

In Dundee, most of the areas have water although water pressure is still low.  Dundee normally consumes around 10 000 kilolitres a day, Mr Ramlall said and yesterday, 6900 kilolitres were pumped after the pumping was resumed.

It is understood that the pumps were taken to a Newcastle company to be repaired. More details tomorrow after an Umzinyathi
