Vryheid Rugby Club – Rugby trials separate the men from the boys

"For me it's about getting out there, for players in the rural areas to be seen and for them to experience the level of rugby outside Northern Natal." said Head Coach, Rich Verster.

SPIRITS were high and the atmosphere electric at Vryheid Rugby Club on Friday night, as players took to the field to showcase their talent in a display of daring determination and tenacity.

After several weeks of intensive training at the club for those players who have approached this season with dedication and commitment to the club, rugby trials for the 2015 season took place, coinciding with the club’s sponsors’ meeting, where current and potential sponsors were invited to spend a social evening with the committee and the squad.

Mike Becker, of McCarthy Inyanga Empangeni, a current sponsor, was present at the meeting and took a few moments to address the club members and committee regarding their sponsorship.

Club President, Rieg Verster, thanked the members and the sponsors for their contributions thus far and appealed to them to commit to another season of hard work from the players and support from the sponsors, as well as sincere bid to businesses and companies to step forward and back the club in their endeavour to nurture and develop young players from all walks of life, giving equal opportunities to all potential future rugby stars who have the talent and dedication, but no other means to reach their dreams.

“For me it’s about getting out there, for players in the rural areas to be seen and for them to experience the level of rugby outside Northern Natal.” said Head Coach, Rich Verster.

According to Verster, the next two weeks will be spent building up to the much anticipated game against Rovers in Durban on February 21 and against Greytown on February 28. While some may feel that the daunting challenge of taking on a team as formidable and competent as Rovers so early in the season may be somewhat premature, Verster is confident in the strength of his squad.
