Burglars – 100, Police – 3?

Statistics regarding violent crimes in Newcastle may be down, but a spike in house and business burglaries has left residents without peace of mind.

Since December last year, more than 100 burglaries have been reported in the combined areas of Hutten Heights, Aviary Hill, Pioneer Park and other suburbs.

At the time of going to publication, more than ten cases have been reported for this week alone.

Statistics regarding violent crimes in Newcastle may be down, but a spike in house and business burglaries has left residents without peace of mind.

Police sources have confirmed that investigation has resulted in the profile of a syndicate of suspects, who officials are searching desperately to apprehend.

The crew for each burglary seemed to consist of the same people, explained the source.

“It’s five people. Efficient and professional, they enter your homes targeting common hiding places and are out again within minutes.”

Unlike many other burglaries, the suspects linked to the recent spate of increased burglaries are not afraid to burgle a home during the day.

In some cases, children have come home to find their houses ransacked in the suspects’ search for hidden valuables within a house. A resident has raised concerns regarding the issue, saying the statistics were absolutely horrifying.

“The community needs to be more vigilant and proactive in its fight against crime. These burglars seem to be moving from suburb to suburb and we can’t let this continue. We need to report the crimes and take steps towards stopping these issues.”

Police spokesperson Captain Shooz Magudulela was contacted with questions regarding the increasing amount of burglaries.

He declined to comment without having all of the necessary information. However, on two separate cases in the month of January, two suspects were arrested and linked to the home and business burglaries.

A third suspect was also arrested on January 26 for attempting to sell alleged stolen property.

“If you are buying stolen goods or suspected stolen goods, then you are part of the crime,” said Capt. Magudulela.

The increasing incidents have resulted in a growing concern from the community, with many members rallying together in the fight against crime.

Residents have been advised to take note of the following:

The burglars are efficient and quick.

They are extremely stealthy and are not afraid to break into your home while you sleep or are at work.

Including a rail guard in your gate systems will help to keep the burglars from removing the gate.

If you are not staying at home, or will be out of town for a timeframe, make sure you arrange a friend or family member to stay at your home.

Ensure you have all emergency and community policing numbers available on-hand to help should anything occur, or to report any suspicious activities.
