A narrow escape

It is believed two customers, who were the actual target, were followed into the business by two suspects. When the customers took out money to pay the business, the suspects drew firearms and forced them to the floor.

Further information regarding the attempted robbery that led to the shooting of a business owner at a Murchison Street business on Thursday, January 29, has surfaced.

Originally, reported as a shop assistant in his forties, the victim of the shooting was in fact the co-owner of the business.

It is believed two customers, who were the actual target, were followed into the business by two suspects. When the customers took out money to pay the business, the suspects drew firearms and forced them to the floor.

The brother of the victim, also a co-owner, shouted for help before being held up by one of the suspects. The owner resisted and a scuffle ensued between them. The owner managed to overpower and temporarily subdue the suspect.

At the same time the victim, reportedly standing behind the counter at the time, also managed to overpower the second suspect, confronting him during which he was shot at. Fortunately, the bullet only grazed the back of his head, requiring stitches.

The victim was rushed to MediClinic Newcastle for treatment. However, it is believed he escaped serious injury. No other injuries were reported.

The suspects fled the scene empty-handed and on foot, reportedly in the direction of the taxi rank. K9 Unit’s Warrant Officer, Sasha Naidoo, responded to the call and gave chase; no arrests have yet been made.

W/O Luthuli confirmed a case of attempted robbery and murder has been opened.

Police are currently investigating the matter and request members of the public with information to come forward.
