Fort Amiel Musuem invites the community to ‘join the Natal Field Force’ and explore the sites and battlefields of the Transvaal War of Independence (first Boer War), north of Newcastle.

The event is set to take place on November 14 and 15, which will include visits to Fort Amiel, the British Cemetery at Mount Prospect, the Battlefields of Lang’s (Laing’s) Nek, Schuinshoogte and Majuba, as well as a visit to O’Neil’s Cottage.

The programme will begin on Friday at the English Masonic Lodge in Kirkland Street. Starting at 6pm, history enthusiasts will be given a presentation on the background of the historical sites.

The presentation involves a PowerPoint show and a short film clip presented by David Sutcliffe, the local Battlefields Tour Guide. This presentation includes maps, sketches and photographs describing the movements of the British and Boer forces and the battles that took place.

The presentation is designed to help enthusiasts familiarise themselves with the events and sites prior to visiting them.

The actual tour will commence the following day, November 15, from Fort Amiel, Amiel Park, at 8am and is set conclude at 6pm. Those who wish to participate in the historical experience require their own transport, lunch boxes, folding chairs, and R20 for Friday night, as well as R30 for Saturday.

The monies will be used for entrance fees at the relevant sites.
