Washing the hand that feeds you

Phakamani Buthelezi of oSizweni and Nomusa Mabaso from Madadeni were two winners of free electricity who received their prizes recently from the mayor and representatives from Ithala.

Two donations, two projects that have left a number of residents with smiles on their faces.

The first came as an appreciation to residents who voted for Mayor, Afzul Rehman, as the’ Best Performing Mayor’ in KwaZulu-Natal.

Twenty of these voters were selected at random by Ithala Limited to win R6 000 worth of free prepaid electricity.

Phakamani Buthelezi of oSizweni and Nomusa Mabaso from Madadeni were two winners of free electricity who received their prizes recently from the mayor and representatives from Ithala.

They were ecstatic when Cllr Rehman took the title again, for the third consecutive year.

“This is our mayor. We love him; he’s the best we’ve had that is why we voted for him,” said Miss Mabaso.

After handing over the cheques to the respective recipients, Cllr Rehman headed over to the Sat-Chit Ananda Fernwood Hindu Temple to hand over 400 chairs to the organisation.

Unlike other donations, the funds for these chairs did not come out of municipal coffers, but rather, Newcastle councillors spared the money from their own pockets.

“I casually mentioned that we would be making a donation to the temple’s committee, and they made sure it got done in the end. The ward three councillor, Matthew Shunmugam is excellent, and the people should be grateful for this. We will be rolling out play-parks at the Fernwood park in the near future as well,” explained Cllr Rehman.

He thanked Fermosa Plastics for their assistance in the donation, saying this was a prime example of businesses giving back to the community.
