Umzinyathi to host 2014 KZN SALGA Games

'preparations for the Salga games are advanced at Umzinyathi district.

“Umzinyathi is ready for the SALGA Games,” Mayor James Mthethwa announced at the sixteenth anniversary of the KZN South African Local Government Association Games launch and draw function held at the Battlefields Country Lodge.
All of the eleven district municipalities of the KwaZulu-Natal province were represented by either their mayor and/or officials. Ithala – the main sponsor of these prestigious games – was represented, along with the Department of Sport and Recreation.
Mrs LB Zulu, Local Organising Committee Chairperson of Umzinyathi, indicated that ‘preparations for the games are advanced’, and assured the gathered guests that ‘all basic requirements will be catered for’. This is the first time that Umzinyathi is to host games of this calibre. The Head of the Department of Sports and Recreation, Rohini Naidoo, said they want to see these games matching the standard of the Olympics. She further emphasised the importance of these games as a platform to promote healthy lifestyles and social cohesion.
At the function, Umzinyathi representatives gave a break-down of where each sport will be played, followed by the highly-anticipated draw.
Expectations are high: the Harry Gwala District failed to provide suitable accommodation for the participants in last year’s games, but Umzinyathi officials promised to ‘bring our best’ during the games.
