IEC supports fight against breast cancer

The aim of the programme was to heighten awareness of the disease

In honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Islamic Educational Centre (IEC) held a fun and informative afternoon at the school on Friday. The aim of the programme was to heighten awareness of the disease, as well as make the community aware of the value of an early detection plan, getting over the shock and the progressive treatment that follows.

Learners at the school were encouraged to support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by paying R5 to wear civvies (lots of the girls wore pink scarves). The proceeds will be given to the Breast Health Foundation in Johannesburg.

The programme on Friday afternoon included a discussion by local surgeon Dr Nilesh Nair on breast cancer, as well as a fitness programme later in the afternoon. The guests were then treated to lovely refreshments. The theme for the afternoon was ‘Supporting the fighters, admiring the fighters, honouring the taken and never ever giving up hope’.

It was a great day of learning and bonding for old and young women alike. The school intends on continuing its role in ‘unpacking’ educational programmes for the good health of the community.
