Driver arrested with firearm after collision

The drunk driver had a firearm pushed down the front of his trousers

On Thursday afternoon, while rain and hail fell from the sky, there were numerous collisions in and around town. Luckily, none of them were serious.

One of the accidents saw the driver of a Ford Fiesta colliding with a VW Jetta near the Department of Home Affairs in Keate Street. The driver of the Fiesta fled the scene, speeding down Alexandra Street. He then collided with a second vehicle, before coming to a halt in Alexandra Street.

Public Safety officers  and Sharaj Ambulance Services responded to the scene.

All three drivers were given Breathalyser tests and it was found that the driver of the Fiesta was under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest. During the arrest, while his hands were being handcuffed behind his back, the officers suddenly realised that the man was armed. The drunk driver had a firearm pushed down the front of his trousers. The firearm was confiscated.

No injuries were reported.
