Arrested with 11 parcels of ‘khat’?

The 35-year-old driver was arrested and faces charges relating to the possession of illicit drugs

A man has been arrested after he was found to be in possession of drugs suspected to be ‘khat’.

While busy with activities aimed at combating drug offences, the Ladysmith Dog (K9) Unit stopped a vehicle in Queen Street on Wednesday.

A search of the vehicle yielded 11 parcels containing a drug thought to be khat.

The 35-year-old driver was arrested and faces charges relating to the possession of illicit drugs. The drugs have a street value of around R11,000.

The suspect appeared briefly in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where the matter was provisionally withdrawn to allow for the drugs to be sent to a laboratory for testing.
