Carnage in Ezakheni – 28 killed or injured

The Ladysmith Gazette reports on a shooting spree on the Colenso/Pieters road, the subsequent collision and the death and destruction that remains.

The Ladysmith Gazette is reporting on a horrific killing spree in the area of Ezakheni.

On Saturday, gunmen opened fire on a car which was travelling on the Colenso/Pieters road, killing one woman and injuring all four other occupants. According to the report, the passengers were all female, travelling to a wedding. It is believed another of the passengers died later in hospital.

A fully loaded taxi travelling on the road at the time was involved in a collision, as the driver tried to avoid the hail of bullets.

The gunmen sped away towards Ezakheni, leaving behind the terrified victims, the dead (including a 3-year-old baby), the trapped and the dying.

According to emergency services, four taxi passengers died at the scene and five more died in hospital later.

It is believed the same gunmen then shot a further five men dead at a car wash in Ezakheni.

According to the Ladysmith Gazette, speculation is still rife as to the exact death toll. It is currently believed to be 16, with a further 12 injured.
